What to avoid and what you should do to keep your blood glucose levels at right levels.

Every Meal is important

When you are not eating, your body releases sugar from your liver and if you skip meals specially breakfast your blood glucose level will be elevated. People with type 2 diabetes can benefit from taking in some carbohydrates to signal their liver it’s time to stop sending glucose into the bloodstream.

Healthy Carbohydrates in Your Diabetes Diet

The body needs carbohydrates which is transformed into glucose that can be used for energy. People living with type 2 diabetes tend to lose energy and strength, and sometimes incur headaches if they do not consume enough of the right amount of carbs and at the time. A good strategy is to spread your food consumption over the entire day, so your levels of energy will always be right.

Al Dente means “good for you”

Pasta is a common source of carbs and if consumed properly can help optimize your energy levels. However, it’s important to know how to prepare pasta to maximize its benefits to you. Overcooked pasta is often soft and mushy and tends to increase the rate of release sugar into the bloodstream - the sugar spike. It’s well known that big torrents of sugar into your bloodstream is destabilizing to your glucose level. So try cooking your pasta less, and enjoy it al dente, or slightly hard.

Diabetes bars just in case

If you are always on the run or have a busy schedule you should be extra focused on not missing a meal. Just in case, try to have a handful of bars in your bag or desk drawer so you’ll also have a good alternative when you’re caught with visitors or cannot split for lunch due to a meeting. This is a fall-back strategy and should not be an approach you rely on every day, so don’t abuse it.

Cinnamon as sweetener

This aromatic spice can bring out the best of your recipes without high sugar levels. Cinnamon goes great with chicken and meat and highlights the natural sweetness of tomatoes in a marinade. It’s fine to sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal or yogurt. Use it in baking. Go ahead and enjoy it if you like its taste.
